Independent Record Label:
Music labels
that operate one or a few music labels. Independent labels can be just as successful but
operate from a smaller company base. They are traditionally known as offering
more ‘organic’ music rather than manufactured music. An independent record label is a music label that may own one record label or very few. This record label will receive no funding and will operate purely on money which is raised by the label itself. Budgets for music videos from independent record labels may be smaller than that of major labels due to the funding from other organisations that major labels receive. However independent labels can be just as successful as major labels as up and coming artist generally start out in smaller companies and branch out when they become more well known. Independent record labels can be very successful and generally include artists from the indie and punk genre for example Rough Trade who have artists such as The Libertines and Arcade Fire.
Dreamboat Records is a British independent music label based in Bristol, England. The label was founded in 2005, and released records on a small scale for a group of local artists. In 2009 it expanded to include releases of independent film soundtracks. Artists signed to this label are The Rollercoaster project, Robin Allender, This is Kit, Bear in Heaven and Whalebone Polly.
FM Records and Revolver Records were two labels in common ownership that came together to form FM Revolver in the 1980s. The FM label presented itself as FM Records, FM Coast to Coast, FM Dance and FM Revolver. The label was distributed by BMG Ariola Munich and in the UK by BMG until 1991. FM artists included Adam Bomb, Asia, Atom Seed, Babe Ruth, Cloven Hoof, Dark Star, Jack Green, James Young, King Kobra, Lisa Dominique, The Macc Lads, Marino, Multi-story, Pet Hate, Rough Trade, Sofia Rotaru, Steve Gaines, Tobruk, Torino, Tradia, UFO, White Sister and Wrathchild
Native Records is a small British independent record label formed in Sheffield, England. The label was founded by Kevin Donoghue in 1985, after he left RCA Records. In 2006, Native formed its own distribution company Indie distribution. Native Records artists are Undercurrent, OneUnder, PLMB, Waiting For June, ReVerbed, The Talk, Girl Spit, Lee Foster, Pimp Sneekerz, B Troop and Various Production.
By researching into different record labels, I have gained an insight into how record labels progress within the music industry and how their artists and music benefit really from being signed to a major label. We feel that our chosen artist and song would be signed to a independent label due to its Indie genre and niche target audience. I think that it is not fair that the music industry is dominated by four companies as big artists would only want to sign to these labels as they feel they would get noticed a lot more than being signed to an independent company. If a well-known artist was to sign to a independent record label it would give that record label a financial boost and more artist will follow. This has a negative effect on this industry as people do not care about the smaller companies they just worry about the bigger on and the artists singed to the bigger record labels. The independent record labels are not as a success as the major labels as they do not have any well known artists signed to them, they do are not known to the public and so are their artists. The independent record labels do offer new and fresh artists that no one has heard of before which might get noticed by the major record labels.
