Planning Magazine Advert- Miss Miller

The purpose of a magazine advert is to promote the artist to their target audience. It will make the audience want to see more of him and if the artists advert appeals to the target audience then they will will want to buy more of his songs and albums. If the magazine advert appeals to the audience then they will also want to see him in his concert as they feel like they may have a connection with him, as the artist stereotypically stares at the audience to make it look like they are looking at the audience. I want my magazine advert to be relatable and help fans to feel closer to my artist.Through my research on other magazine posters I understand that colours, lighting and the representation of the artist is needed in order for the target audience to be attracted to the song and the album. The research allowed me to understand what elements are needed in order to make a good magazine advert for a dance music video.

For my magazine advert, through my research I have realised that it is pivotal for the artist to be the main centre of attention, to do this I am going to use my artists image in the centre of the advert looking right at the audience this is to make the fans feel my artist is staring right at them, which will make it more personal, also by having my artists image as the main focus point it will attract people who are already fans as they will see the CD is about Calvin Harris. We are going to use a black and white image for our artists face and Photoshop a disco styled bright coloured pair of glasses onto his face, this will make our artist stand out and also make the magazine advert look unique and different to fans, which will hopefully attract the audience. By using a bright coloured pair of disco glasses onto our artist face it will show our audience the type of music genre our music is, it also follows the conventions of the dance music genre. Our artists name is going to be above our artists face at the top of the poster and this will be in bright colours, our whole advert will be bright colours except for the artists face, which is black and white this is to give the advert a feel that our artist is in a club with dark lighting and his glasses and bright typography gives the audience the feel of strobe lighting and uv paint. The colours that I have used are conventional to my song and music video as these are the core colours that are used throughout our music video and i wanted to carry this on throughout our magazine advert. The artists image will be one of a party lifestyle, which follows the conventions of the dance music genre especially for DJ'S who are commonly promoted as living a lavish party lifestyle.  I will put a glow around the font to make the date, group and production company stand out more to the background and the pictures and this would be the first thing that the audience look at, which would therefore promote the album and artist. The use of bright colours will stand out over the dark background this will attract audiences eyes as it will look physically attractive. The layout for an advert is important in order to catch the eye. It is important that the advert is not cluttered with information as it could put someone off reading it. I decided to layout my main title 'Calvin Harris' at the top of the advert. I felt that this was the best position for the artists name as it allows space on the rest of the advert for the rest of the information. I also feel that placing the title at the top makes it clear to see for the readers and also does not interfere with the main images on the magazine advert.

To conclude, the research I took into a magazine advert was very helpful as it enabled me to see how artists appeal to their target audience and get there albums out there. This has helped me in creating my own magazine advert.

  1. You have provided a basic analysis of your plan, explaining why you have chosen some elements to use within your advert.

    You need to:
    1) Make sure you explain all the connotations fully (black and white - could mean he is serious about his music?)
    2) Elaborate on some of your points by explaining how you want elements used to represent and promote the artist - elaborate on connotations - bright colours also link with feel good vibe of music?
    3) Remember your artist's name will be different to the artist you are copying! - say that this will be different for your actual advert and you have used this as an example
    4) Elaborate on your conclusion by stating how you feel this will appeal to your target audience and how it is conventional or not of the genre
